BIOGRAFIA

Ken Vandermark & Paal Nilssen-Love have played together since 2000 in various settings & as duo since 2002. The duo work within free expression while including a strong element of heavy rhythmic groove, melody, sound & noise. Together, they join Andy Moor & Terrie Ex of Dutch legends THE EX, who are known for mixing elements of rock, free improvisation, traditional folk & abstract noise to create their own very unique sound world. Both duos converge, crashing along sometimes, creating a cacophonous racket but always musical & always ready to change direction or turn a new corner. The music is extroverted, energetic, powerful & inclusive but also confrontational & provocative, where rhythm, noise, melody & harmony melt together in perfect union.

“Live at Area Sismica” is Lean Left’s fifth live recording, the second released on Unsounds, and by far the best, most versatile and exciting yet.

Recorded live at Area Sismica in Forli Italy, September 22 2012, the final date of a long tour with thousands of kilometres behind them: the band at this point have played enough dates in a row to have become a very tight unit but still free flowing and with a thousand ideas, one interrupting or overlapping the next. They engage 400 percent in what could be best described as a volcanic eruption, and take their audience close to the burning heart of their fearless music making.

In two sets, Lean Left is creating a nonstop celebration of instant music with blissful grins and playful energy, rattling and shaking at right angles with one furious swing after the next.

As Stewart Lee said about Lean Left — Jazz theorizing be damned, it’s like being 18 again.

Lean Left throws together two explosive duos – the sax/drums collision course of Ken Vandermark and Paal Nilssen-Love with the piledriving guitarists from The Ex – to make up a positively apocalyptic quartet: an elemental musical force featuring Grade A international players zoning in and scrambling together rock, jazz, noise and blistering free improv into a highly-charged onstage assault, each member taking their sounds and bodies to the edge and often snapping out of the wilds and into glorious passages of regular rhythm.
